Crab Champions Is Setting a High Bar For Solo Developers

Created by the solo developer behind Crab Rave, Crab Champions is a third-person roguelike shooter that distills everything worth preserving about looter shooters into 20 to 40 minute runs.

You travel across exotic islands with up to three friends, defeating enemy hordes, collecting loot, and stacking build combinations until your crab becomes an unstoppable force. The game loops endlessly if you want to test your survival limits, and Crab Champions balances difficulty separately depending on party size, a detail many multiplayer roguelites skip.

What sets this apart is what it refuses to include. Crab Champions contains no loot boxes, no microtransactions, and no battle passes. Every cosmetic skin and challenge unlock is earned through play, not purchased. This constraint forces tighter design. If you cannot monetize after the initial sale, every feature must justify its existence through gameplay value alone.

The visual design backs this up. The game prioritizes performance while maintaining carefully created aesthetics, and it warns players that certain builds can create visually intense flashing effects. You can find the full game on Steam, or dive into the latest updates on Twitter.
