Darkest Dungeon Isn’t Finished Yet as Surprise DLC Arrives This August

There aren’t many games that receive a major expansion after their sequel has already been released, but that’s exactly what’s happening with Darkest Dungeon. More than six years after its last DLC arrived, Red Hook Studios is returning to the original gothic roguelike with The Fire’s Edge, launching on August 18 for PC, Mac, and consoles. It’s the game’s first new downloadable content since 2020, and for long-time fans, it’s an unexpected return to the haunted halls beneath the Estate.

Rather than introducing an entirely new cast, The Fire’s Edge brings two familiar faces from Darkest Dungeon II into the original game. The Duelist and Runaway are making the jump back to the first Darkest Dungeon, but they haven’t simply been copied across. Red Hook describes them as reimagined versions of the sequel’s heroes, redesigned to fit the original game’s slower, party-focused dungeon crawling.

Two New Heroes, Plenty of New Possibilities

For anyone who has spent hundreds of hours assembling the perfect expedition, two additional hero classes are a significant addition to a roster that’s remained largely unchanged for years.

The Runaway introduces an entirely new Burn combat mechanic to the original Darkest Dungeon, giving players another way to wear down enemies over time. Her abilities are designed to work especially well alongside heroes that rely on stuns, pulls, knockbacks, and enemy repositioning, opening the door to fresh party combinations that simply weren’t possible before.

The Duelist offers a very different challenge. She constantly shifts between aggressive and defensive combat stances while moving between party ranks, making careful planning just as important as raw damage output. Mastering her Riposte-focused playstyle looks set to reward players who enjoy thinking several turns ahead rather than simply reacting to each encounter.

More Than Just Two Characters

The Fire’s Edge isn’t stopping at new heroes. Red Hook has also confirmed additional combat mechanics, powerful new trinkets featuring systems such as Trigger Uses, Quest Charges, and Progressive Trinkets, along with three brand-new Hamlet districts… The Academie Duello, Craftworks, and Archaeological Base Camp. Together, they represent the biggest expansion to the original game’s systems in years rather than a simple character pack.

While the studio hasn’t revealed every surprise waiting inside the DLC, it’s clear The Fire’s Edge is designed to give veteran players new strategies to experiment with while remaining faithful to the punishing formula that made Darkest Dungeon such a standout when it first launched.

A Welcome Return to the Estate

Perhaps the biggest surprise isn’t what’s included in The Fire’s Edge, but the fact that it exists at all. With Darkest Dungeon II already established, many assumed Red Hook had moved on from supporting the original game. Instead, the studio has chosen to return to the title that introduced players to its distinctive blend of stress management, impossible decisions, and brutally unforgiving turn-based combat.

The Fire’s Edge arrives on August 18 and is available to wishlist now on Steam. For players who never truly left the Estate, or anyone looking for a reason to descend into its horrors once again, the first new Darkest Dungeon DLC in years is shaping up to be a welcome reason to return.
