Arakuma Studio, an indie developer, released Nether Dungeons on November 15, 2024 as a free-to-play action dungeon crawler built around procedurally generated floors that reshape enemy placement, traps, and layouts with every run.
Players choose from a roster of distinct heroes, each carrying individual strengths and weaknesses, with Farfadox available as a default character. An in-game editor extends this further, letting players construct and customize their own hero from scratch rather than selecting from a fixed pool. Combat spans a wide weapon spectrum — melee swords, magic, firearms, and explosives — and runs are structured in escalating phases, moving from standard enemy encounters up through high-difficulty boss fights that demand both reflexes and tactical adjustment.
Two systems layer onto the combat foundation. Spell Cards are buffs acquired mid-run that attach temporary special abilities to a hero, shifting how a given attempt plays out without carrying between sessions. Mascots are companion pets that accompany the player through dungeons, contributing to fights and providing support effects that vary by the mascot chosen. Together these systems mean two runs with the same hero can play quite differently depending on which cards and mascot are in play.
A Hardcore Mode is available for players who want significantly steeper difficulty beyond the standard experience. Loot drops are randomized per run, so weapon access is never guaranteed, and the combination of hero variety, random dungeons, and variable card draws is the primary driver of replayability. The update history is limited to a launch patch on November 15, 2024 and a bug-fix pass in May 2025. Boss encounters are designed with individual mechanics rather than scaling reskins, making each one a distinct test within the run.
