Nuevo Tokyo has seen better days. Crime syndicates known as the Narkuzas have taken control, and there’s only one person reckless enough to take them on.
Following a successful showing during Steam Next Fest, Mexican Ninja is now preparing for its full release, bringing its stylish blend of arcade beat ’em up action and roguelike progression to Steam in the near future.
The game drops players into a vibrant world inspired by both Japanese and Mexican culture, trading realistic city streets for colorful neighborhoods packed with gangs, fast-paced fights, and plenty of opportunities to show off your combo skills.
Combat leans into old-school arcade energy, rewarding quick reactions, careful positioning, and learning enemy patterns rather than simply button mashing your way through every encounter. As runs progress, players unlock powerful Mexican Jutsus and invest in the Way of the Donkey skill tree, allowing each run to evolve into a different fighting style.
There are also hidden outfits, cosmetics, and plenty of opportunities to experiment with new builds, giving the roguelike progression a satisfying reason to keep coming back for one more run.
What makes Mexican Ninja stand out, however, is its setting. Rather than relying on familiar fantasy worlds, it embraces a playful fusion of Japanese and Mexican influences, creating a version of Nuevo Tokyo that feels refreshingly different from anything else in the genre.
After a strong Steam Next Fest demo, the next stop is the full release, and if the demo was anything to go by, the Narkuzas might want to start looking over their shoulders. You can keep up to date on the developer’s official Discord channel,
