Every run of Spelunky 2 begins with a single life and a whip, dropped into a procedurally generated cave system where nearly everything — traps, shopkeepers, enemies, liquids, and other players — can interact with everything else in ways that produce cascading, often fatal surprises. Developed by Mossmouth and BlitWorks, it released on September 29, 2020 as a substantially expanded successor to the original Spelunky, transplanting the action to the Moon and sending a new cast of explorers after both treasure and missing family members.

The world is larger and structurally more complex than its predecessor. Runs branch at multiple points, letting players choose different routes and biomes, and many levels carry a second layer behind the main playfield — a literal third dimension in a 2D game — that may hide treasure rooms, secret passages, or other surprises. Dynamic liquid physics mean water and lava flow, pool, and reshape the environment in real time, creating hazards that shift within a single room. Enemies and players alike can mount animals with special abilities, including turkeys, and enemies may ride them too. Poison and curses add status-effect pressure on top of the standard attrition of health and resources.

  • Branching level paths that vary route, biome, and difficulty across runs
  • Dual-layer levels with a background plane containing hidden rooms and passages
  • Rideable mounts usable by both players and enemies
  • Fully simulated liquid physics affecting level layout dynamically
  • Base Camp between runs where unlocked characters gather, shortcuts can be accessed, and movement can be practiced safely
  • Local and online multiplayer, including a competitive Arena Mode

Between runs, Base Camp functions as a persistent home: characters accumulate there over time, the space develops as exploration continues, and it doubles as a practice area removed from run pressure. The game layers secrets deep enough that the developer has suggested some may require coordinated community effort to surface — a design stance that rewards obsessive cross-player investigation rather than solo completion.

The update history shows a game that moved quickly after launch. A dense patch cycle through late 2020 stabilized the release, an online multiplayer public beta arrived in December 2020, and the full online mode launched properly. By September 2021 — the game’s first anniversary on Steam — Arena Mode received online support. Numbered patches continued through 2022, reaching v1.28 in November of that year, after which the update cadence quieted. A merch announcement appeared in late 2025, suggesting the property remains active outside the game itself.

Spelunky 2 rewards players who find satisfaction in mastering a system so interlocking that death always has an explanation, even when it arrives from three simultaneous directions at once.
