COMPOUND
Every run of COMPOUND drops you into a randomized facility and asks you to physically move your body to survive — ducking real bullets, sidestepping enemy fire, and clearing procedurally arranged rooms until you reach the heart of The Corporation or die trying. Built from the ground up for room-scale VR by solo developer Bevan McKechnie, it is a deliberate rejection of the wave-shooter format that dominated early consumer VR, instead delivering a full free-roaming FPS structure with multiple locomotion options, including teleportation for players sensitive to motion.
Runs are punishing by design. Enemies are lethal, and the randomized layout means no two attempts play out the same. A practice area lets players isolate and drill against specific enemy types between runs, and an easy mode exists for those still calibrating. The music was composed by SPEEDBLACK, whose soundtrack is available separately.
- Randomized, free-roaming FPS structure built for room-scale VR
- Physical dodge-and-duck combat requiring real body movement
- Multiple locomotion options including full teleportation support
- Practice area for isolated enemy drilling outside of runs
- Leaderboards and speedrun support
- Comfort and motion-sickness options configurable in-game
COMPOUND spent several years in early access before it released on July 19, 2022. Its update arc across that period was substantial: environment overhauls touched the sewer and HQ areas in early-to-mid 2021, while individual updates added a compound bow, extra weapon slots, hazards, a chaos mode, hand-presence improvements, and a full sandbox practice area. A progression update arrived in January 2022, leaderboard and speedrun infrastructure landed in late 2021, and a v1.0 open beta ran in the weeks before the full release. A post-release patch followed in August 2022.
COMPOUND asks for genuine physical engagement and prior VR comfort. Players still finding their footing in virtual reality will likely struggle, but anyone who has outgrown stationary VR experiences and wants a demanding, old-school FPS built honestly around the medium will find it difficult to put down.
