Every run in Loop Hero begins with a hero who walks an endless circular path on his own, and the player’s job is to decide how dangerous that path becomes. Four Quarters released the game on March 4, 2021, built around a deliberate inversion of roguelike agency: instead of directly controlling a character through combat, the player places cards onto the loop and the surrounding grid, summoning terrain, buildings, and enemies that shape what the hero encounters on each revolution. Combat itself is fully automatic — the hero attacks and takes damage without input — so the tension lives entirely in card placement decisions made before and between laps.

Cards are drawn from a deck assembled at the start of each expedition and expanded through unlocks. Placing terrain cards such as forests or mountains changes what enemies spawn and what stat bonuses the hero receives. Enemy cards add creatures directly to the path, increasing the difficulty but also the loot and resource yields. The balance between manageable danger and productive risk is the central judgment call the player makes throughout a run. Stronger equipment drops from harder fights and is swapped in on the fly; there is no inventory management screen between loops.

  • Multiple hero classes, each with distinct equipment slots and unlockable perks
  • Card placement on both the loop path and an open surrounding grid, with terrain interactions between adjacent tiles
  • Automatic real-time combat governed entirely by equipped gear and passive stats
  • A persistent base camp built from resources gathered during runs, which provides bonuses to future expeditions
  • Boss guardians gating story progress across a multi-chapter campaign
  • Mobile version released in May 2024

Resources carried back from an expedition fund camp buildings, which in turn unlock new cards, new hero classes, and new passive bonuses — making each failed or successful run feed directly into the next. Choosing when to retreat and bank resources versus pushing for one more loop is a recurring gamble, since death forfeits a portion of what was collected.

The update history shows rapid post-launch stabilization. Four Quarters shipped day-one and day-two patches immediately at launch, followed by hotfixes through March 2021 as the game reached 500,000 players. A substantial v1.1 update arrived in June 2021, adding new tiles and enemies. Smaller maintenance patches continued through 2022, and a mobile port launched in May 2024.

Loop Hero suits players who enjoy systemic thinking and indirect control. The satisfaction comes from constructing conditions rather than reacting to them.
