Castec Studios, the developer behind Shape Shifter: Formations, released this free-to-play action roguelite on May 27, 2025. It is a twin-stick shooter built around horde survival and build crafting, playable solo or in two-player local co-op.

Each run begins with a ship selection from a roster of twenty, paired with one of twenty weapons. Ships and weapons are not interchangeable skins — each carries its own active and passive abilities, ranging from tesla towers and burning lasers to time-slowing fields and clone units that replicate the player’s attacks. Every ship and every weapon has its own dedicated skill tree, together totalling 800 individual skills, letting players reshape how a given loadout functions rather than simply scaling its numbers.

During a run, killing enemies generates experience that unlocks upgrades from a pool of over two hundred options. These upgrades stack infinitely, meaning a build’s power ceiling is determined by how long the player survives rather than a hard cap. The game supports status effect stacking and summoned constructs with their own weapons as distinct build directions. Runs are structured to last roughly thirty minutes, with an optional endless mode for players who want to push further. Between enemy waves sit bullet-hell bosses, each with its own attack patterns; completing runs on higher difficulties unlocks prime variants of these bosses with additional rewards.

Difficulty is shaped by a modifier system that changes environmental and enemy properties — electrified walls and elemental enemy infusions are among the options — giving players granular control over the challenge they face. An auto-aim mode is available alongside the default manual twin-stick controls. Permanent progression between runs unlocks new ships, weapons, upgrades, and mechanics through a separate skill tree, and new content can also be unlocked by completing in-game challenges.

The game entered early access well before its 1.0 launch, with update activity visible from at least mid-2024. A series of hotfixes through versions 0.5.x ran from July into August 2024, followed by a named Update 4 in October 2024 and further early access hotfixes through November. Version 1.0 launched in May 2025 and was followed by two hotfixes before the end of that month, with two additional patches issued in June 2025, indicating active post-launch maintenance. The prime boss variants, unlocked only at higher difficulties, represent the game’s hardest available content at launch.
