Every cannon on the Stormstrider can only be manned by one Fool at a time, so when three sea monsters close from different angles simultaneously, someone is going to take hits to the hull while you scramble — that tension of coverage and prioritization is what Ship of Fools, developed by Fika Productions, is built around.
Released on November 22, 2022, Ship of Fools is a seafaring roguelite designed around two-player cooperative play, though solo runs are fully supported. Players take the role of the Fools, anthropomorphic creatures sailing the Stormstrider across the Archipelago to stop a supernatural storm called the Aquapocalypse. Each run is structured as a series of nautical sectors: players chart a route through a map, choosing which islands to visit for shops or treasure and deciding when to risk sailing into the Everlasting Storm, which shifts position dynamically and can cut off planned paths. Route planning is a genuine strategic layer, not decoration.
Combat is the run’s heartbeat. Players physically move between cannon stations on the ship’s deck, loading and firing at incoming creatures while simultaneously managing sail adjustments and hull repairs. Over a hundred trinkets and artifacts can be found and equipped across a run, and combining their effects into synergistic setups is the primary way power accumulates within a single voyage. Each of the selectable Fools carries a distinct special ability that shapes how a run plays out. Boss encounters feature large leviathan-scale enemies that test whether a crew has built enough firepower and coordination to survive. A controller is required for local multiplayer.
Fika Productions maintained an active development arc well past launch. Early patches addressed balance through 2023, and a notable Endless Mode update arrived in May 2024, with adjustments following shortly after. April 2025 brought a free update alongside new playable Fools, described as the Alphy’s project update. A Console Update was greenlit in October 2025 and released in April 2026, marking the game’s broadest platform expansion since launch.
A new player’s first hour involves picking a Fool, learning the cannon-and-repair rhythm against lighter early encounters, finding their first artifact, and then hitting the map screen to make their first real routing decision before the storm moves.
