Most zombie roguelikes treat the apocalypse as grim business. Death Road to Canada, developed by Rocketcat Games and Madgarden and released July 21, 2016, refuses that entirely. It is a randomly generated road trip across a collapsing United States, played for dark comedy as much as survival, where the absurdity of your party members arguing or a dog learning to drive sits alongside genuinely dangerous encounters with swarms of up to 500 zombies at once.

Each run is a sequence of stops along the road north: players choose between locations to scavenge, rest, or recruit, then execute those choices in real-time top-down action segments where fighting, fleeing, or squirming through a crowd are all legitimate tactics. Furniture is a weapon system in its own right, escalating from thrown chairs to hurled sofas as characters grow stronger. The combat is simple in input but chaotic in execution given the scale of the hordes, and death is permanent for any survivor who goes down.

Between action segments, the game delivers interactive fiction events whose options and outcomes shift based on the traits and stats of whoever is currently in the car. A party of cowards faces different choices than a party of aggressive fighters, and rare events, characters with unusual abilities, and specific weapon types surface unpredictably across runs. The character creator allows players to seed the random pool with custom survivors modeled on real people, who can then appear and die at the game’s discretion. Up to four players can share a single screen in local co-op, each controlling one survivor.

Rocketcat Games has maintained an active update schedule well past release. The feed shows a pattern of named anatomical updates, each going through multiple public test branches before a full release: QUADRICEPS and RETINA both shipped in late 2025, STOMACH followed in April 2026, and a TRACHEA update entered testing by mid-2026, indicating sustained development nearly a decade after launch.

Where Spelunky trusts tight level design to generate its stories, Death Road to Canada hands that job to randomized fiction, party dynamics, and the specific chaos of being outnumbered by several hundred slow-moving corpses.
