Nightmare Frontier is a tactical extraction looter that combines turn-based combat with the constant risk of pushing too far into enemy territory. Set in an alternate version of the early 1900s, you lead a crew of scavengers into a ruined boom town consumed by living nightmares known as the Dreadweavers. Every expedition revolves around the same difficult decision: stay longer to collect better loot or extract while you still have the chance. Surviving with valuable supplies strengthens your crew for the next raid, but every extra step into the Frontier increases the danger.

The enemies you face are manifestations of fear itself, turning each district into a tactical puzzle filled with threats, cover, and opportunities. Between raids, you’ll recruit new scavengers, improve their equipment, and prepare for another trip into the Nightmare. Every successful extraction helps your group grow stronger, while every failed gamble leaves valuable resources behind and forces you to rethink your approach on the next run.

What Makes It Different?

  • Combines turn-based tactics with extraction-based roguelite progression
  • Lead a party of scavengers rather than a single character
  • Set in an alternate 1900s boom town consumed by living nightmares
  • Fight Dreadweavers born from fear
  • Decide whether to extract safely or risk staying longer for better loot
  • Recruit new scavengers between expeditions
  • Upgrade equipment and build stronger crews across multiple runs
  • Uses cover, positioning, and tactical planning during combat
  • Increasing Nightmare Levels introduce stronger enemies and additional hazards
  • Loot collected during successful extractions fuels long-term progression

Every Raid Is a Risk Assessment

No expedition begins with the expectation of clearing the entire map. Instead, every objective is weighed against the supplies already sitting in your backpack and the dangers still waiting ahead. Valuable equipment, crafting materials, and other rewards become increasingly tempting the deeper you venture, but surviving long enough to carry them home is never guaranteed.

Extraction is always available as an option, forcing you to constantly decide whether your crew has already earned enough or whether the next encounter is worth the risk. Walking away early may feel cautious, but losing experienced scavengers and valuable loot can make overconfidence far more expensive than patience.

Tactical Combat Against Living Nightmares

Combat unfolds in turn-based encounters where positioning, cover, and careful planning matter more than rushing forward. Every member of your crew contributes to the fight, making teamwork just as important as individual equipment upgrades. The Dreadweavers bring different threats to the battlefield, requiring you to adapt your tactics instead of relying on a single strategy for every encounter.

As Nightmare Levels increase, enemies become more dangerous while additional hazards begin appearing throughout the districts. Choosing when to continue exploring and when to head for extraction becomes increasingly difficult as the Frontier grows more hostile.

Building a Better Crew Between Expeditions

Returning safely from a raid is only part of the progression. Resources recovered from the Frontier allow you to recruit additional scavengers, improve equipment, and prepare a stronger party for future expeditions. Every successful extraction expands what your crew can accomplish, giving you better tools for tackling increasingly dangerous districts.

That ongoing progression works alongside the extraction loop rather than replacing it. Stronger equipment improves your chances, but every raid still asks the same question: have you gathered enough to leave, or is there one more reward worth risking everything for?

Good If You Like…

Players who enjoy Rogue Waters, Invisible, Inc. or The Last Spell should appreciate Nightmare Frontier’s combination of turn-based tactics, extraction gameplay, squad management, and roguelite progression.
