Spell chaining is the engine around which everything in Wizard of Legend is built. Developed by Contingent99 and released May 15, 2018, it is a fast-paced dungeon crawler in which a player assembles a loadout of elemental spells before each run and then strings those spells together mid-combat to produce compounding damage and crowd-control effects. Execution speed matters as much as build selection: spells are mapped to discrete inputs and the game rewards players who can read enemy patterns quickly enough to weave attacks without breaking momentum.

Each run takes place in the Chaos Trials, a procedurally generated gauntlet hosted by the Council of Magic in the Kingdom of Lanova. Contestants fight through conjured enemies across randomized levels and face council members as boss encounters. Surviving the full gauntlet earns the title of Wizard of Legend. Spells and relics collected during a run customize a wizard’s capabilities on the fly, with elemental variety broad enough to support aggressive melee-range builds, summoner setups that lean on minions, and ranged approaches in between. Over a hundred spells and relics exist in total, and synergies between them form the game’s primary source of replayability.

  • Spell-chaining combat system built around elemental combinations and precise timing
  • Over 100 unique spells and relics spanning multiple elemental schools
  • Procedurally generated dungeon layouts with council-member boss fights
  • Local co-op with a revival mechanic that lets a downed partner return by defeating enemies
  • Full controller support alongside keyboard and mouse

Post-launch development at Contingent99 was sustained across several years. An early patch in mid-2018 added a build randomizer and localization for French, German, and Russian. The Sky Palace update arrived in March 2019, followed by a Boss Rush mode in May 2019 to mark the first anniversary. January 2020 brought the Thundering Keep update, and that May’s second-anniversary patch added further content. A music-focused update and a controller support beta both shipped in September 2021. Attention then shifted toward a sequel: Contingent99 entered Wizard of Legend 2 into Early Access in October 2024, and it reached full release in June 2025.

Wizard of Legend is a tight, unforgiving game that asks a player to think about build architecture before a run and execute precisely during it, which makes it a natural fit for anyone who finds satisfaction in drilling a combat system until the pieces click.
