The Binding of Isaac is a hugely influential top-down roguelike dungeon crawler in which a boy named Isaac flees into a monster-filled basement beneath his home. The game pairs twin-stick shooting, using Isaac’s tears as projectiles, with a vast pool of items that combine in unpredictable, run-defining ways. Its disturbing religious imagery, dark humor, and grotesque art give it a singular tone. With hundreds of items, characters, secrets, and endings, it set a standard for replayability in the genre. The original and its remake and expansions (notably Rebirth and its DLC) are considered genre cornerstones. Item synergies are the heart of its enduring appeal.
