Is This the Balatro of Mahjong? Mahjuro Has Officially Launched!

I’ve never personally sat down to play mahjong before, but I wasn’t an avid poker player until Balatro came along. Mahjuro utilizes mahjong tile mechanics and the roguelite formula by treating familiar tile hands as unstable scoring engines. Players draw tiles, form melds like pairs, sequences, triplets, and kongs, then cash in their structures for escalating scores. The design philosophy echoes Balatro’s approach to rule-bending and combo-stacking, but anchors the experience in the classical tile-matching framework that has defined mahjong for centuries. The announcement came via Discord.

Mahjuro is a mahjong roguelite deckbuilder inspired by Balatro, set inside a House that does not play fair. Draw tiles, form melds, then cash in your growing structure for scores that climb from careful clears to impossible numbers.

Announcement from Zelda Hessler via Discord

Structurally, Mahjuro sends players through seven wings containing 21 chambers total, plus 20+ additional rule-bending challenges. Between runs, you’ll spend winnings on relics, tile packs, talismans, and zodiacs that twist the game’s rules in your favor. The progression tree includes 15 yaku to unlock and level, giving runs a sense of building agency as you discover new synergies with the game’s 100+ relics that stack, echo, and scale in increasingly chaotic ways.

Bosses don’t follow the house rules either. They restrict tiles, manipulate scoring, and force adaptation mid-run, creating the kind of pressure that defines compelling roguelite design. The Steam store page lists 15 Steam Achievements and full controller support, and it’s already available to play now! For a crisp fiver Mahjong fans will have the same fun of their classic game amped with our favorite rogue mechanics.
