Maldhalla Brings the Boss Rush to Steam Today, With a New Nightmare Every Three Minutes

Three minutes. That’s how long you’ve got before Maldhalla decides the hundreds of enemies already trying to kill you aren’t doing a good enough job. Perhaps you’ve managed to carve out a little breathing room, collected some decent weapons, and started feeling confident about your chances. Then the Giant arrives, slams the ground, and reminds you that surviving three minutes is hardly worth celebrating. Manage to survive another three, and you’ll have a fresh boss to worry about.

Developed by solo creator eyejoker, Maldhalla launches today, bringing a fast-paced survival roguelite packed with 21 playable characters, 32 weapons, and an assortment of increasingly unpleasant enemies. It’s got all the familiar ingredients of a bullet heaven, making sure you never get too comfortable.

Three Minutes to Live, Give or Take

Things start off relatively manageable. You’ll move around the battlefield, dodging incoming enemies while your weapons automatically attack anything unfortunate enough to wander into range. Every minute that passes makes the enemies stronger, gradually turning the battlefield into a crowded mess of monsters, projectiles, and whatever destruction your current build can produce.

Every three minutes, Maldhalla introduces another oversized problem, complete with its own attacks to learn and avoid. The Giant comes crashing in with powerful ground slams, while the Bone Dragon, as you might expect, breathes fire. These aren’t just enormous enemies with bigger health bars, either. Bosses have distinct attack patterns, with additional patterns appearing when they return.

According to the developer, most first attempts end when players meet the Giant.

Twenty-One Heroes Walk Into a Monster Horde

One of Maldhalla’s biggest attractions is its generous character roster. There are 21 heroes to unlock, each equipped with a starting weapon, passive ability, and unique active skill. That gives you plenty of opportunities to find a character whose abilities suit your approach, rather than simply choosing whichever one has the nicest outfit.

The Ranger, for example, can roll out of danger while briefly becoming invulnerable. The Paladin has access to Mjolnir, throwing the legendary hammer before calling it back, while the Bard gets a substantial boost for keeping to the beat. These abilities add to the combat, giving you something to think about beyond collecting upgrades and running away from the biggest thing on screen.

With so many characters available, there’s plenty of potential for experimenting with different playstyles, especially once you start combining their abilities with the game’s enormous weapon collection.

Relics, Weapons, and a Little Build-Breaking Magic

Having 32 weapons available is already a decent starting point. Maldhalla takes things further with Relics, powerful bonuses that activate when you’re carrying specific combinations of two or three weapons. That means grabbing the strongest-looking weapon isn’t necessarily the smartest decision. Sometimes, choosing something that complements your existing arsenal could unlock a Relic capable of turning a struggling run into an absolute massacre.

You’ll also find 21 different types of gems, allowing you to improve stats such as critical hit chance, damage, evasion, and lifesteal. Then there are 60 Blessings to discover through chests, ranging from Common to Legendary.

Between the weapons, gems, Blessings, and character abilities, there’s plenty to experiment with. A build focused on surviving incoming damage could play very differently from one designed to destroy everything before it gets close enough to attack. Of course, even the most impressive collection of upgrades won’t do much good if you forget to dodge a dragon’s fire breath.

From Rookie to Immortal

Progression isn’t limited to what happens during an individual run. Maldhalla features achievement-based unlocks, rewarding players with new characters, weapons, and Relics as they continue playing. The developer has also confirmed there are no paid shortcuts for unlocking additional power.

For anyone who enjoys chasing high scores, there’s a nine-rank competitive system stretching from Rookie all the way to Immortal, alongside seasonal leaderboards. The full release also introduces the Old Prison, a map featuring the Rat King and Warden among prison cells swept by searchlights. Unlocking it requires defeating the Bone Dragon in the Dungeon on Normal difficulty, giving players another substantial challenge to work toward.

There’s even a replay system for studying leaderboard runs. With a free demo already available, players can get a taste of the action before committing to the full game.

Maldhalla seems determined to turn that familiar bullet heaven promise of “just one more run” into a personal challenge. Three minutes might be enough to defeat you today, but perhaps tomorrow you’ll reach six. Maybe nine. Eventually, that Bone Dragon is going to have to answer for all those ruined runs.
