Shroomwood Was Supposed to Launch Today, but This Little Mushroom Isn’t Quite Ready to Leave the Forest

Shroomwood was supposed to begin its Early Access adventure this week, sending one small mushroom into a procedurally generated forest filled with slimes, zombie mushrooms, magical creatures, and far more weapons than you’d reasonably expect Shroomie to be able to carry.

It looks like we’re going to be waiting a little longer. Sporelite Games’ action roguelike was still showing an October 2 release on Steam yesterday, but that date has now disappeared. The store page simply lists Shroomwood as “Coming soon,” with no replacement date given and the game currently unavailable to buy.

So unfortunately that means Shroomie is staying in the ground for now.

Something Changed Right Before Launch

Exactly what happened isn’t clear. There hasn’t been an official delay announcement from Sporelite Games or publisher Zemore Indie Games at the time of writing, and things get slightly stranger when you look elsewhere. SteamDB still records an October 2 release date, while a press release published around the planned launch even announced that Shroomwood was already out in Early Access.

Steam itself disagrees. The store page currently says the game is not yet available, and with its release date switched to “Coming soon,” there’s no indication of whether we’re looking at a short delay or something more substantial.

The developers had previously said they were polishing the game and ironing out bugs ahead of Early Access, but there’s nothing confirming that this is the reason behind the last-minute change.

For now, we’ll just have to wait for Shroomie to tell us what happened.

There’s Quite a Lot Waiting in the Forest

Whenever Shroomwood does arrive, Early Access will start with one playable character heading into an ever-changing forest built from more than 20 handcrafted rooms.

Combat mixes twin-stick shooting with melee attacks, giving you more than 20 weapons to find and over 50 modifiers capable of changing their stats and how they behave. You can dual wield too, letting you combine different weapons and hopefully find something capable of dealing with the forest’s slimes, magical creatures, zombie mushrooms, and more than five bosses.

Runs use procedurally generated layouts, rearranging those rooms each time you head back into the Shroomwood.

Death eventually sends you home to Shroomstead, where persistent upgrades give you something to work on between attempts. There are NPCs to meet, weapons to improve, magical obelisks to discover, and then another forest waiting when you’re ready to head back out.

Early Access Is Only the Start

The version waiting to launch is still only the beginning of what Sporelite has planned. The developer says the finished game is expected to contain more than ten times the gameplay and content available at the start of Early Access, with more weapons, modifiers, enemies, bosses, areas, and powerups planned during development.

New playable characters are on the list too, each with their own stats and abilities, alongside cosmetics and a branching level system capable of changing how different areas of Shroomwood connect together.

The original plan was to reach full release by the end of 2026, although it remains to be seen whether this delayed Early Access launch will change that timeline.

For now, Shroomwood remains listed as “Coming soon” on Steam, with its free demo still available while we wait for a new release date.
