The world of Shattered Realms is quite literally falling apart. A betrayal shattered the Aether Crystal at its heart, leaving entire realms twisted by corruption and most of its Guardians gone. Fixing that mess now falls to whoever is left, which mostly involves heading into those broken pieces of the world and hitting everything responsible very, very hard.
Spellbound Studios has now launched a free Steam demo for its upcoming dark fantasy roguelite ARPG, giving players their first unrestricted chance to start reclaiming those fragments ahead of the game’s planned Early Access arrival in 2027. The demo includes two playable Guardians, randomized runs, world events, bosses, piles of loot, crafting, permanent progression, and plenty of opportunities to see just how ridiculous a build can become.
Sorceress or Berserker?

The demo starts by giving you two fairly different approaches to saving the world. The Sorceress brings magical firepower, while the Berserker takes a more direct approach to dealing with whatever corruption has wandered into striking distance. Both have their own abilities, but neither is locked into a single build.
Shared elemental and physical magic can be combined with each Guardian’s individual toolkit. This lets you stack different effects, lean into particular damage types, and inflict status effects that help keep increasingly crowded battlefields under control. So, basically, pick whoever looks more fun.
The full Early Access version is currently planned to add the Archer as a third playable Guardian, with six classes eventually intended for the finished game.
The Realms Refuse to Stay the Same

Runs take place across corrupted fragments of the world, with procedural maps rearranging themselves each time you head back in. Randomized wave encounters and world events add another element of unpredictability, while enemies come with their own movement patterns, behaviors, and attacks rather than simply charging into the nearest weapon.
Then there are the bosses. Wave bosses interrupt the regular slaughter with more involved encounters, while world bosses are designed to put whatever build you’ve assembled through a much nastier test.
Considering this is a roguelite, the correct response is obviously to assemble something horribly overpowered before they get the chance.
Loot, Craft, Die, Improve

Shattered Realms is leaning heavily into the ARPG side of things too. Enemies can drop randomized equipment across multiple rarity tiers, complete with different stat rolls and modifiers. Bosses have unique drops capable of adding more substantial traits, meaning one lucky piece of equipment could push a run in a completely different direction.
Not everything disappears when a run ends either. Aetherhold acts as your home between attempts, where materials brought back from the realms can be used to craft new gear, improve existing equipment, and change your loadout before heading out again. Permanent upgrades provide lasting stat improvements, while temporary abilities discovered during runs handle the more unpredictable side of character building.
So getting flattened by a boss isn’t entirely wasted effort, hopefully.
From Playtests to a Proper Demo
This isn’t the first time players have been allowed into Shattered Realms. Spellbound Studios ran multiple Steam playtests earlier this year, using feedback to rebalance abilities and items, introduce new mechanics and events, and make changes to combat, pacing, and progression before moving toward this demo release.
Now there’s no access request required. The Shattered Realms demo is free to download on Steam.
